My son Joe visited from San Francisco for a few days. He came to collect some of his possessions. Hooray! I now have more closet and garage space. He also returned his old Macintosh (Apple) computer and proudly announced that he was bringing his parents into the computer world! Joe’s last words as he departed were, “Mom, should I show you again how to access the computer?” (and to think I have almost learned how to use all the goodies on my electronic typewriter!!) So I am now prompted to attempt to recall some items new in my lifetime.
Music: records -78s, 45s, 33s, cassettes, CDs, music videos.
TV: black and white, color, stereo, hearing impaired, cable, satellites
Cameras, my first at age 8 cost about 39 cents. Kodak was the big name brand, 8 mm movie cameras to record the family antics, slide projectors, cameras that needed to be set by film speed, distance etc, (now all that is automatic) video camcorders
Frozen foods, Birdseye, T.V. dinners, and microwave foods
Home electronics: Microwaves, food processors, electric can openers, electric juicers, blenders, electric refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, disposals, trash compactors, VCR’s, digital clocks
Air conditioners in homes, cars, even in sports centers (oh, to have had this cooling effect when growing up in humid St. Louis)
Travel: prop planes, jet travel, supersonic travel (the Concorde)
Private telephones, answering machines, fax machines, car phones, cordless phones
Contact lenses, xerox copy machines for business and home, automatic garden sprinklers ,
Space exploration: satelites launched by rockets, starting with Russian Sputnik and on to study of space stations, I saw via TV a man walk on the moon, close up pictures of far off planets
I am sure that I shall be able to add many more items to this list before the good Lord lets me move to the heaven of perfection where the mind will understand this technology.
