October 1995
You’ve heard of tennis weekends, golf weekends…well, join me while I tell you about grandchildren’s sports weekends. I just want you to know what lies ahead in your futures.

The weekend started on Saturday as we drove up the coast to spend some time in Oxnard with second daughter, Barbara, her husband, Buz and their three boys. Our first stop was at 10:15 A.M. to watch fourteen-year-old T.J.’s flag football game. After the game we drove to Barb’s house for a quick lunch, a quickie viewing of the Notre Dame- USC football game on TV, then off to eight-year-old Christopher’s soccer game. In the early half of the game Chris played goalie, a position where you don’t have to run constantly unless the other team charges your goal. (I really don’t understand soccer.)

After the one hour game we returned to the Laubacher’s house and watched Oxnard’s Corey Pavin in a golf tournament on TV interspersed with the UCLA-Cal football game. Mike played ball with little Michael who is almost four. Chris wanted me to play (no money) poker! He has always enjoyed board and card games. I might add he’s ready to play professionally.
After a barbecue fish dinner (fish caught by Buz) T.J. the teenager was off to a supervised Halloween party and the two little boys were so tired they went to bed early. We four adults finished the evening with a few hours of bridge. Mike and I usually give ourselves a treat by staying at the nearby Radisson River Ridge Hotel.

It is now Sunday. We relaxed with breakfast overlooking the River Ridge golf course; then off to Camarillo where T.J. was playing All Star soccer. After the first half we said good-bye to all the family and hurried up the Seminary hill to attend Mass at Fr. Liam Kidney’s new Catholic Church (Padre Serra). Next we headed up the Conejo grade and I thought home to rest, but NO! Mike said, “Mario is playing baseball at 2:00 today and I’d like to stop by. It’s on our way.” HA!
Mario is our second son Jim’s boy and Mike’s namesake. Luckily daughter Luisa had played her game in the morning. Afterwards we went to Jim and Michele’s house in Reseda and warmed ourselves by the fire while we all played Canasta or a computer game called “Civilization.”
Somewhere over the weekend we gained an hour and we oldies really needed it!
